ABOUT US

The Banyan Trust was founded in 1998 in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands with the aim to provide high-quality support to children with special needs and disabilities from disadvantaged backgrounds in countries like India, Bangladesh and elsewhere.

As first endeavour The Banyan Trust initiated, funded and developed the Apanjan Project in the Indian city of Calcutta in collaboration with local NGO OFFER. Relocated to the West- Bengal village of Govindapur, Apanjan is nowadays a thriving regional centre for children with disabilities and has grown financially independent from The Banyan Trust.

With the opening in 2008 of the Sanjeevani Centre for Child Development The Banyan Trust has expanded its horizon to the vast slums of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. In close partnership with SLUM (Society of Lowest Urban Mass).

The Banyan Trust has since established more educational activities and services for children with special needs at the heart of different slum communities in Dhaka. The enthusiastic and loyal support of our sponsors in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands is enabling The Banyan Trust to make a world of difference in the lives of these vulnerable children and their families.

The Banyan Trust has no paid staff in Europe – it is managed by a network of dedicated volunteers. Our programme is dependent entirely on voluntary contributions. The Banyan Trust raises funds through a regular sponsorship scheme, private one-off gifts as well as donations from companies, grant-making trusts and special events. We also work within Bangladesh and India to raise awareness of issues affecting children with special needs and disabilities. The Banyan Trust is there to give what these children deserve: a childhood and opportunities to a bright future.
